How Are Cedar Shingles Made?

One of our most popular products are the Western Red Cedar shingles, and for good reason. They're made from cedar wood, taken from the tree's heartwood. The traditional manufacturing method involves sawing off singular cedar shingles from one block of wood to give them a smooth and uniform look. Today, shingles are cut with machines to enhance their uniformity.

First, the trees are sawn into two sections. Then, they are hand-split or machine-split into shingle roofing products.

How Are Cedar Shingles Cut and Steam-Bent?

The cutting process requires knowledge and experience to avoid splitting. To reduce wood waste, the cuts must follow the direction of the grain.

After splitting trees into blocks, the shingles are produced by using a hydraulic press attached to a blade. The shingles are sawn to a taper and are smooth on both sides, making them consistent and easy to install.

To achieve the look of our classic Country Cottage roof system, shingles for the eaves and gables are specially steam-bent with our patented equipment to the correct radius for the curve of the roof. This, combined with specific installation patterns make up the Cottage System
